Swiss banking is united in its quest to keep Apple Pay from taking a large share of the electronic payment business in Switzerland. But now a second bank has stepped out of line.

The U.S. IT giant has offered its payment application Apple Pay in Switzerland for 100 days now. Several thousand users have signed up so far and generated a considerable dynamic for the service.

And after Graubuendner Kantonalbank (GKB), Apple has now been able convince a second bank to offer the service to its customers. Bank Linth, a regional bank operating between the cities of Winterthur and Bad Ragaz in the East of the country, is supporting Apple Pay as of today, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Twint in the Lead

The Swiss unit of Liechtensteinische Landesbank (LLB) has linked Apple Pay to its credit cards and will cooperate with the card issuer Cornèrcard for the purpose. «This will provide a true additional benefit to our 65,000 clients,» the bank said.

Most Swiss banks will disagree. They are still united behind the Swiss solution, Twint. The pay app is due to be operational in January 2017. It also has 500,000 clients signed up.

Apple Pay by contrast has GKB, Bank Linth, Bank Cornèr with Cornèrcard, the kiosk operator Valora, as well as credit card issuers Visa, Mastercard and Swiss Bankers under contract.
