The Swiss banking employers’ association has replaced its outgoing chairman with a prominent representative of the big banks.

The employers’ association representing the Swiss banking industry has elected Lukas Gaehwiler as its new chairman, a banker with a distinguished career in the industry and a high degree of credibility, the association said in a statement today.

Gaehwiler, 52, has indeed had a remarkable career in banking so far. Having started his professional career at St. Galler Kantonalbank, he later joined Credit Suisse before switching to cross-town rival UBS after two decades at Switzerland’s No. 2.

Chairman of UBS Switzerland

At UBS, he was in charge of the Swiss business for six years. In 2016, he pulled out of operational management and was made chairman of UBS Switzerland.

At the employers’ association, he replaces Barend Fruithof, who has left banking. He took over at Aebi Schmidt earlier this year, an industrial company, which manufactures utility vehicles.

«The finance industry is undergoing fundamental change. The future business environment will change significantly. To remain competitive and successful in future, the banking industry has to resolutely adjust to the new conditions,» Gaehwiler told members of the association after his election.
