Swiss energy and communications minister Doris Leuthard is planning to join the financial sector after leaving government office. She’s in talks to take over as chair of one of Switzerland’s biggest banks.

Doris Leuthard last year signaled that she intended to resign at some stage during the current four-year cycle of government. Now information has emerged that the 54-year-old centrist politician may become the chairwoman of Raiffeisen Bank, according to «Nordwestschweiz» newspaper.

Leuthard, a lawyer by training, would replace Johannes Rueegg-Stuerm at the helm of Switzerland’s third-largest bank. Rueegg-Stuerm is under fire for his role in the transaction of Investnet.

Problem Solving

Finma, the Swiss banking regulator, had launched a probe into the transaction to unearth potential conflicts of interest of former Raiffeisen boss Pierin Vincenz. After the departure of Vincenz from the bank, the regulator stopped its investigation. But Finma is still looking into the role of the bank.

Leuthard may thus stand a fair chance to land the job, not least because of her untainted image as the star performer in an otherwise unremarkable coalition government
