Berner Kantonalbank has found a successor to CEO Hanspeter Ruefenacht. The new boss is currently in charge of the business with private and corporate clients.

The Bern-based bank, which is also known under its acronym BEKB, assigned Armin Brun as successor to Hanspeter Ruefenacht, taking control of his new duties on July 1, 2019.

Brun, 53, has been a member of the executive committee of BEKB for a year as head of the private and corporate clients’ business, the bank said in a statement on Thursday. Previously, he worked in the marketing and distribution department at Luzerner Kantonalbank. At Postfinance, he also signed responsible for the corporate clients’ business, as well as marketing and was a member of the executive board.

Digital Upgrade Pending

BEKB wants the new CEO to sharpen the bank’s profile as a company that is close to its customers and that has an advanced digital set-up. The board also appointed Alois Schaerli as deputy CEO.

Ruefenacht had announced his departure in the summer, giving the bank plenty of time to find a suitable successor. BEKB shortly before had abandoned the introduction of the Avaloq core-banking system and decided to stick to and upgrade its old IBIS system.
