A former UBS banker has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for spying on his employer and money-laundering. He probably won’t ever go to prison though.

The Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona convicted the data thief to three years and four months in prison and a suspended fine, according to a report by «AWP».

The 45-year-old former banker received the sentence for qualified economic espionage, money-laundering and a violation of Switzerland’s gun laws. He was accused of having stolen data of more than 200 UBS clients served by the bank’s Basel office and of selling the information to the Germany authorities for 1.45 million euros ($1.65 million), according to the prosecution. The court acquitted him of the charge of a violation of banking secrecy laws.

The former banker wasn’t present during trial and verdict, having fled to Germany before it started.
