Urs Rueegsegger, the former head of SIX, is returning to the banking business as chairman of one of Switzerland’s cantonal banks.

Urs Rueegsegger stepped down as head of SIX, the operator of the Swiss stock exchange, in 2017. Two years later, Rueegsegger is ready to return to the banking industry: Zuger Kantonalbank selected him as its new chairman, according to a statement released on Friday.

Rueegsegger will stand for election as chairman at annual general meeting on May 2, 2020. If elected, he will replace Bruno Bonati. Bonati originally had planned to step down a year ago after a decade at the Zug-based bank but decided to stay on as Matthias Michel opted to stand for election as a member of the upper house in Bern instead of becoming the chairman of Zuger Kantonalbank. The elections for a new parliament are due in October.

Rueegsegger was chief executive officer of St. Galler Kantonalbank for seven years before joining SIX in 2009. He left the exchange operator in 2017 and was replaced by Jos Dijsselhof.
