Finma, the Swiss financial regulator, appointed a new chairman from next year. She is a veteran of central bank economist and academic and has worked as a portfolio manager.

The Swiss government named Marlene Amstad to take over as chairman of Swiss financial overseer Finma from next year, it said in a statement on Friday. Amstad, currently vice-chairman of Finma, replaces current head Thomas Bauer, who is retiring after five years in the job, the government said.

Amstad was chosen for extensive experience in Swiss finance: she has also been a member of Finma's board for the past four years. She has worked at the Federal Reserve of New York as well as at Switzerland's central bank and the Bank for International Settlements, or BIS.

She teaches economics and finance at the University of Bern as well as in Shenzen at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has co-led a fintech center at the Shenzhen Finance Institute for the past two years and is a regular guest-researcher at centra banks (most recently the Bank of Japan). She worked at Credit Suisse as a portfolio manager from 2001 to 2002.
