The burgeoning crypto bank is hiring Switzerland's former deputy attorney general as its new head of compliance.

The Zurich-based bank for digital assets is hiring Maria-Antonella Bino as its chief compliance officer, effective immediately, it said in an emailed statement on Wednesday. Bino was deputy attorney general of Switzerland until 2013, and spent the last six years as chief counsel to BNP Paribas in Switzerland.

Bino is a legal heavyweight with more than 20 years of experience in compliance and international financial crime investigations, including money laundering, terrorism financing, and organized crime. Sygnum said her experience in both the private and public sectors is a bid to ensure Sygnum hews to best practices in digital asset compliance.

Bino, who will become the seventh member of Syngum's top management, is the latest in a series of high-profile hires for the bank, which along with Seba won a license nine months ago. Sygnum, which is presided by ex-UBS CEO Peter Wuffli and counts former central banker Philipp Hildebrand among its backers, hired ex-UBS banker Oliver Banz in January.

«Digital assets are already bringing fundamental change to the financial industry,» Bino said. «Compliance needs to keep pace with these changes from both a regulatory and technological perspective, and also constantly look to streamline client experiences.»
