UBS is reportedly exploring the option for traders to work from home through simulated experiences via virtual reality headsets. It isn't clear whether the technology could sustain such a push.

The bank is experimenting with creating a trading floor simulation for its London-based staff, according to a «Financial Times» report (behind paywall), using Microsoft’s Hololenses. The head-mounted unit uses multiple censors, advanced optics and holographic processing that display information and images that can blend in with the real world.

«If people really can't come to the office, can we create a virtual presence?» Beatriz Martin, head of U.K. at the Swiss bank, told the pink paper. «We are thinking about experimenting with the tools that are out there.»

Remote Workspace

It is unclear if Hololens can sustain a high-quality experience in terms of resolution and user comfort for a longer period – like a trading day. UBS’s work-from-home efforts extend beyond just its trading operations or the European region.

The Swiss bank has already launched a «UBS Workspace» platform which allows employees to have mobile-based access to any files or the information in the exact same format at any time and place. UBS, like many other Swiss firms, has been slow to return its staff to offices at Paradeplatz, Broadgate in London, or Manhattan – and employees have been equally reticent.
