The CEO of one cantonal bank is leaving for the top job at a rival institute in Zug. He made his name as a digitizer.

Zug's cantonal bank is naming Hanspeter Rhyner as CEO, effective in May, it said in a statement (in German) on Tuesday. He follows Pascal Niquille in the role, the 61-year-old CEO of Zuger Kantonalbank who will retire.

Rhyner, who is 52, is currently the CEO of Glarner Kantonalbank, or GLKB, where he made a name for himself as a strong advocate for digitization – finews.com named the bank the most digital in Switzerland in 2014. He also led the local government-backed lender to a public stock listing six years ago.

Under Niquille, Zug's cantonal bank focused more strongly on wealth management and was one of Switzerland's first cantonal banks to embrace digital assets. He also expanded Zuger Kantonalbank's credit book. Niquille has also been the chairman of of payments specialist Viseca since 2017.
