The Swiss government is reinforcing its oversight ahead of a handover from Chairman Thomas Bauer next year.

The governing cabinet named Martin Suter as vice-chairman of Finma, Switzerland's financial regulator, it said in a statement on Wednesday. Suter is the former finance chief of Swiss life in Switzerland and has been a Finma director since 2018.

The promotion comes one year ahead of current Chairman Thomas Bauer handing over the reins to Marlene Amstad, who is currently his deputy, as the government disclosed in March. The government also named Susan Emmenegger (pictured below), professor of law at the University of Bern, to join Finma's board as a regular director.

Emmenegger, who has served in several government-related bodies including one plotting the future of Switzerland's financial center following watershed changes such as the end of banking secrecy, is also vice-president of the Swiss competition commission, or Comco. She replaces Renate Schwob, a banking and lobby veteran who steps down next month.
