Huw van Steenis is an UBS uber-MD, head of its sustainable finance activities, senior adviser to CEO Ralph Hamers, and head of investor relations. He is adding a prestigious academic feather to his cap.

It is a homecoming of sorts for the City veteran and former star analyst: Huw van Steenis is to advise Oxford University on climate-conscious investments, the U.K. university said in a statement. Van Steenis graduated from Oxford in 1991 before embarking on a career in finance.

More recently, van Steenis did a brief stint as Schroders' head of strategy and also advised Bank of England governor Mark Carney on finance's future. He worked as a banking analyst for Morgan Stanley until 2016.

CEO Whisperer

UBS' previous CEO Sergio Ermotti hired him last year as a senior advisor and a group managing director, an elite group of roughly 100 top bankers and risk-takers. The Oxford job is noteworthy for its prestige but also the university's financial heft: its endowment manages roughly £4 billion ($5.3 billion).

Oxford said it chose van Steenis in «a competitive process led by a panel including student and climate scientist representatives, Huw was chosen due to his exceptional background and insight into incorporating sustainability issues into strategic investment decisions.»
