A top insurance executive has been appointed to succeed Mark Branson as head of  Swiss financial watchdog Finma.

The chief investment officer at insurer Zurich, Urban Angehrn, will succeed Mark Branson as CEO of Swiss financial regulator Finma, both organizations said Tuesday.

Angehrn will take up the post on November 1.

Started Career in Investment Banking

Before becoming an insurance manager Angehrn began his career in investment banking at J.P. Morgan and Credit Suisse First Boston.

He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard and an MSc in theoretical physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH).

Looking to Future

«With the appointment of Urban Angehrn Finma is gaining an experienced leader with broad national and international financial market experience in the insurance, banking and asset management industries,» Chair of Finma’s board of directors Marlene Amstad said in the Finma statement, adding: «In addition, he is very familiar with topics of future relevance such as digitalization and sustainability, which will shape the financial center.»

Interim Leaders

Finma said that Jan Blöchliger would remain acting CEO until November 1. Branson left Finma at the end of March to head its German counterpart, Bafin.

Zurich said that its chief risk officer Peter Giger would also act as CIO until a successor to Angehrn was found.
