The head of Switzerland's central bank is recovering after undergoing surgery to treat a heart condition. He isn't expected to return to the job for several weeks.

Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan underwent a surgical procedure over the weekend following a check-up and is recovering, the central bank said in a statement on Monday. The 58-year-old Swiss economist has overseen the Swiss central bank since 2012.

«The operation was successful and Thomas Jordan is in a good condition,» the SNB said. Swiss newswire «AWP» (in German) reported Jordan underwent heart surgery and isn't expected back at work for several weeks, citing sources familiar with his condition.

Upcoming Rate Decision

Until he returns following his recovery, vice-chairman Fritz Zurbruegg as well as governor Andréa Maechler, and all deputy members of the three-person governing board will fill in for Jordan, the SNB said. The central bank refers to this as the enlarged governing board of six people.

The next Swiss monetary policy assessment is scheduled September 23, while a major central banking conference in Jackson Hole, WY that Jordan has in the past attended is due to open on Friday. The SNB disclose neither the length of the policy veteran's absence nor the nature of his procedure.

Deputies In Focus

The statement didn't mention by name Martin Schlegel, appointed Jordan's deputy by the Swiss government three years ago. Jordan oversees the SNB department responsible for economic affairs and international monetary cooperation.

Besides Schlegel, Dewet Moser as well as Thomas Moser (the two aren't related) are deputy governors, to Zurbruegg and Maechler, respectively.
