With social media in mind, Switzerland's largest insurer is changing its logo in response to the war in Ukraine.

Zurich Insurance Group has decided its logo, a white «Z» on a blue background, is too similar to the symbol the Russian armed forces are putting on tanks to identify them in its war against Ukraine.

The company said it was removing it because so as not to be misinterpreted supporting Russia in the war. Therefore «we are temporarily removing the use of the letter 'Z' from social channels where it appears in isolation and could be misinterpreted,» according to a «Reuters» report.

Z for Victory

In addition to the markings on military vehicles, the «Z» has been adopted by Russians supporting the war, prominent on flags and at pro-Kremlin rallies, Reuters said.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the character is short for the phrase «Za Pobedu,» meaning «For Victory.»

The insurer earlier this month said it would no longer be taking on new domestic customers in Russia nor renewing existing local business.

ZZ Top

A look at the website of legendary blues band ZZ Top does not give any indication that they are changing their name and following Zurich's example.
