Swiss crowdfunding platform Wemakeit, gets the thumbs up from a well-known Zurich entrepreneur as it hands over ownership to its own «community.»

The crowdfunding platform Wemakeit has sold over 90 percent of its available shares in an «Initial Public Crowd Offering,» the organization said in an emailed statement Friday.

Currently, Six individuals own the company. This will change when the campaign ends on July 5 and 85 percent of the platform transfers to the crowd.

Half a Million 

The company was founded in 2012 and has a community of half a million people who have used the platform to finance new products, sports, social initiatives and musical careers with 80 million francs, according to the website.

«It's logical that the most important crowdfunding platform should belong to the crowd,» co-founder of the Zurich-based trendy bag maker, Freitag, and new shareholder, Daniel Freitag, is quoted as saying in the statement. 

Banking Ties

The Zurich-based fintech operates offshoots in Lausanne and Bellinzona, and has partnered with Urner Kantonalbank for crowdfunding initiatives, while Telecom giant and banking supplier Swisscom, has used Wemakeit software to build its own crowdfunding platforms for banks.
