This year's choppy markets have dented the central bank's financial results, which depend largely on developments in the gold, foreign exchange and capital markets.

The Swiss National Bank reported a loss of 95.2 billion Swiss francs for the first half of 2022, while the loss on foreign currency positions amounted to 97.4 billion francs, it said in a statement Friday.

Interest-bearing paper and instruments accounted for 48.7 billion francs of losses, while capital market-related investments suffered a 44 billion francs of hit. Exchange rate-related losses totalled 10.3 billion francs.

Gold Gains

Interest and dividend income amounted to 3.3 billion francs and 2.3 billion francs respectively, it said, while the profit on Swiss franc positions totalled 35.1 million francs.

The central bank's gold holdings gained 2.4 billion francs in value, it said.
