Arup, a civil and structural engineering firm, has been involved in some of the world's most high-profile construction projects. Now the company is looking to make a name for itself in green finance as well.

Arup is looking to branch out into a new business area. The London-based firm has been approved by the Climate Bonds Standard Board as a green bond auditor, according to a statement Wednesday, adding the company to a group of firms assessing project finance that is in line with the goals of the Paris climate agreement.

Approved Auditor in the US

In the US, Arup is the only engineering firm to hold Approved Verifier status. There, the company will now provide technical expertise for sustainable finance in the building, energy, transportation, water, and waste management sectors.

Arup will also participate in an industry working group with the Climate Bonds Initiative to develop sector criteria for steel, cement, and hydrogen projects that are important to the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Prestigious Building Portfolio

The list of prestigious architectural projects Arup has worked on is long. Some of its best-known projects might include the Sydney Opera House, the Centre Pompidou, the HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, The Birds Nest stadium and the CCTV building in Beijing, and The Shard in London, to name but a few.

The company was founded in 1946 by British-Danish engineer Ove Arup.
