Software giant Microsoft upgraded its division for the Swiss financial industry. The now-independent business unit is getting an experienced IT manager to lead it.

Christian Thier takes over the newly created position of head of the financial services industry at Microsoft Switzerland with immediate effect. It will now operate as a separate business unit, reflecting the importance of this area, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Previously, the financial services team was part of Microsoft's enterprise commercial business. Thier led the unit for four years and will now report directly to Catrin Hinkel, CEO of Microsoft Switzerland, and is part of the Swiss management team.

Industry Importance

In announcing the appointment, Hinkel said «Today, our customers require individual solutions for their individual needs,» and Microsoft Switzerland decided to elevate the financial services industry as its own business unit «to reflect the importance of this industry and to serve our customers even better.»

Thier joined Microsoft in September 2016 as global business director from UBS, according to the statement. Prior to that, he spent more than 15 years in the financial industry in various management positions.
