The federal government and the cantons will not receive a profit distribution from the Swiss National Bank this year after it posted a record loss for 2022.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) posted a record loss of 132 billion francs ($142 billion) for the year 2022, it said in a statement on Monday.

The loss on its foreign currency positions amounted to around 131 billion francs while the loss on Swiss franc positions was around 1 billion francs, it said. It also saw a valuation gain of 0.4 billion francs on its gold holdings.

The annual loss means that it will not be able to make dividend payments to SNB shareholders including the Confederation and the cantons. Last year’s loss contrasts with previous years’ results: In 2021 SNB's profits reached over 26 billion francs and in 2020 they were 20 billion francs.
