After a four-year stint as the Swiss Bankers Association's CEO, Joerg Gasser has decided to take a new turn.

The Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) is losing Joerg Gasser as its CEO before the end of the first quarter, it said in an emailed statement Thursday. Gasser, who is looking to pursue strategic tasks at the interface between politics and business, will be replaced by deputy CEO August Benz until the position is filled, the statement said.

Ties to Bern

Gasser didn't start out as a banker but began his career at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In 2008, he moved to the Federal Department of Justice and Police after which he joined the Federal Department of Finance.

He served as State Secretary for International Financial Matters from 2016 to 2019, after which he took over at the SBA from Claude-Alain Margelisch who had been in the CEO role for nine years.

«Over his four-year term as the Association’s CEO, he has been instrumental in shaping the framework within which our financial center operates. With his clear focus on key forward-looking topics such as sustainable finance and digital finance, Joerg has made a substantial contribution to the financial center’s competitiveness and innovative power. Thanks to his outstanding network of contacts in the federal capital of Bern, the SBA has further strengthened its cooperation with the authorities, politicians and NGOs,» chair Marcel Rohner said in the statement.

A committee headed by SBA Rohner has been tasked with finding a permanent replacement.
