UBS's new Paradeplatz building will bring more bustle to Zurich's banking center as it includes commercial space and lets the public walkthrough.

The corner where Talacker Street meets Baerengassse is about to get a lot livelier with the renovation of UBS’s Paradeplatz building, according to architectural plans seen by «NZZ» (behind paywall, in German).

The new building’s ground floor will be open to the public and include restaurants and shops, resembling Credit Suisse’s Lichthof with its swanky Baerenhof restaurant on the other side of Talacker Street.

Now, nothing but a gloomy sidestreet (image below), it might seem a stretch to picture a vibrant public hangout in its place.

Desired Destination

The plans by Basel-based star architects Herzog & de Meuron, which are yet to be approved, focus on the interior of the building as the facade itself is listed.

The commercial space around Paradeplatz is sought after by restaurateurs, the report said adding that the walkthrough will be planted and offer seating for pedestrians.

Previously, UBS also included a space for the popular Bar 45, when it renewed its headquarters on Bahnhofstrasse.
