Villars Alpine Resort is transforming into a cultural hub bringing together the arts and culture in the Alps, General Manager Jean-Yves Blatt says to finews.com in an exclusive interview. Particularly the luxurious Villars Palace is at the heart of this transformation.

Jean-Yves Blatt, why did you become a hotel director?

My journey into hotel management was driven by a deep-rooted passion for hospitality and the opportunity to manage a historic jewel such as Villars Palace. The hotel's blend of grandeur and innovative approach to the guest experience inspired me to contribute to the legacy of the many hotels I've had the pleasure of working for.

Also due to the leadership duties?

Leading teams dedicated to creating unforgettable stays for our guests, while pushing the boundaries of traditional luxury, has led to the career I've built over many years and motivates me every day to make a difference in the hotel and restaurant world.

Describe how you came to your current role.

My journey to becoming the Group Managing Director at Villars Alpine Resort is a story of passion and dedication to the art of hospitality. After years of enriching experiences, from my foundational education at the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne to pivotal roles at some of Switzerland's most esteemed hotels, my career has been a testament to my love for this industry.

Leading the The Chedi Andermatt for over eight years was a highlight, where I not only honed my skills but also deepened my appreciation for creating exceptional guest experiences.

However, it didn’t keep you there.

The transition to Villars Alpine Resort in November 2023 felt like a natural evolution, a new chapter where I could bring my vision and passion to another iconic destination. It's an emotional journey for me, stepping into a role that allows me to shape the future of a resort with such a storied past and opportunities, and I'm eager to infuse it with innovation while honoring its rich heritage and the cultural hub we are currently creating for the destination and our hotels.

  • Cultural and Lifestyle Hub: The Villars Alpine Resort group distinguishes itself by transforming its properties into vibrant cultural hubs. With the Villars Palace at the forefront, the group regularly hosts a myriad of artistic and entertainment events, from concerts and shows to exclusive movie screenings and festivals. This commitment not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the region but also enhances the lifestyle experience of guests and visitors, offering them an opportunity to immerse in a world of artistic diversity and creativity.
  • Luxury Blended with Heritage: Each hotel in the group, especially the Villars Palace, combines luxurious amenities with a rich historical background. The recent renovation of Villars Palace and the continuous emphasis on integrating contemporary comfort with classic elegance across all properties underscore a unique blend of heritage and modern luxury that appeals to both traditional and contemporary tastes.
  • Innovative Hospitality and Sustainability: The Villars Alpine Resort group leads in innovative hospitality by integrating sustainability and education into the guest experience. Initiatives like the Villars Institute Knowledge Hub at Villars Palace showcase the group's commitment to educating guests on sustainability and cultural heritage, aligning luxury experiences with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

The emphasis on farm-to-table concepts, local sourcing, and seasonal produce from producers elevates the dining experience, offering guests gourmet, gastronomic menus that highlight the best of Swiss gastronomy.
  • Expansive Wellness and Recreational Facilities: The Villars Alpine Resort group offers wellness and recreational amenities across its properties. The KAEA Villars Alpine Spa at Villars Palace, for instance, provides an exclusive wellness experience enhanced by panoramic views of the Alps. With outdoor swimming pools, hammams, saunas, fitness rooms, and sports courts, the group ensures a holistic approach to the guest’s well-being, catering to those seeking relaxation and active leisure alike.

What is the most unconventional thing you’ve experienced in your job?

Joining the Villars Alpine Resort group, with the Villars Palace at its heart, has allowed me to spearhead an initiative close to my heart: transforming this resort into a cultural hub.

This is quite unusual for a hotel group to create a location within the hotel premises to promote art and culture in every way possible. Our group sets itself apart by transforming our properties into cultural hubs, particularly with Villars Palace leading the charge.

How should one imagine that?

We host a wide range of artistic and entertainment events, enriching both the cultural fabric of the region and the lifestyle of our guests. Furthermore, we blend luxury with heritage, merging contemporary comforts with the historical backgrounds of our hotels, including the recently renovated Villars Palace.

Innovation is at the core of our hospitality, especially in sustainability and education, through initiatives like the Villars Institute Knowledge Hub, aligning luxury with environmental and social responsibility.

How do you define hospitality and excellent guest service?

Hospitality, to me, is the art of making guests feel understood and valued, by offering personalized and thoughtful service that anticipates their needs. Excellent guest service in the context of the Villars Alpine Resort hotels means creating a blend of luxurious comfort, educational opportunities, and sustainable practices, ensuring that each guest's stay contributes to their well-being and the well-being of the planet.

Which VIPs have you had the privilege of hosting at your hotel?

Villars Palace has been a preferred retreat for many distinguished guests over the years, including statesmen, celebrities, and leaders in various fields. While we cherish the trust these individuals place in us, our commitment to their privacy and discretion remains paramount.

What does your flagship hotel offer for a perfect weekend for two at Villars Palace?

Villars Palace Room

A perfect weekend at Villars Palace involves a romantic welcome in one of our meticulously designed rooms or suites, a gourmet dinner at the 1913 restaurant, a day of relaxation at the KAEA Villars Alpine Spa, and personalized cultural experiences, such as a private viewing of our current exhibitions, a concert, a show or simply a wandering within the hotel to discover spaces dedicated to Hergé and the legendary Tintin.

From there, complement your journey with a visit of the Peak Walk by Tissot nearby, a sledding run, a ski day in winter, or a summer hike. Whether in winter or summer, it's a journey through luxury, wellness, and art, set against the stunning backdrop of the Alps.

What plans for the hotel are you excited about?

I am particularly excited about expanding our sustainability initiatives and further integrating the principles of the Villars Institute into our guest experiences. From eco-friendly practices to educational programs that inspire change, we are on a path to redefine luxury hospitality in a way that respects our environment and enriches our community.

I would also point out the cultural hub that we envision and currently build with a dedicated team that is set to bring tourists and locals to meet, mingle and discover art in every way possible.

How is dining changing at your hotel?

Dining at Villars Palace is evolving with a stronger emphasis on sustainability and local sourcing. Our Executive Chef, Christian Bertogna, is at the forefront of this change, creating innovative menus that celebrate the richness of our regional produce, providing guests with not just a meal, but a story of local heritage and culinary excellence.

What’s your personal motto in leading a hotel?

«Lead with vision, serve with heart». My approach to leading Villars Palace and more globally all the hotels of the Villars Alpine Resort is anchored in forward-thinking, ensuring we remain at the forefront of hospitality trends while maintaining a heartfelt connection to our guests, our team, and our community.

Describe your favorite hidden gem in the area.

Beyond the well-trodden paths, there's a secluded alpine meadow that offers the most serene views of the surrounding peaks. It's a place of beauty and tranquility, reflecting the essence of the Alps and the spirit of Villars Palace.

As every hidden gem, the ending point is just part of the trip and the trail that takes you there will simply leave you speechless. Aim for the Lac des Chavannes and wander on the many trails that the region provides!

What is the best piece of advice you received from your mother or father?

«Embrace change with an open heart and a clear mind». This advice has been instrumental in navigating the challenges of modernizing a historic hotel while preserving its soul. It reminds me to always seek innovative ways to enhance our guest experience without losing sight of our heritage.
