Alpha Rheintal Bank Records Decline in Interest Business

Lending at the regional bank declined last year. This was partially offset by record-high trading income.

Alpha Rheintal Bank generated an annual profit of 17.43 million Swiss francs in 2024. This represents a 9.5 percent decline compared to the record result of the previous year, the bank announced on Friday.

Due to the fall in interest rates, net interest income fell by 25 percent to 25.29 million francs. Both the decline in interest on credit balances at the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the sharp rise in interest expences had a significant impact, according to the statement.

Greater Priority for Liquidity

Customer loans fell by 1.8 percent to 2.55 billion francs. Of this figure, 2.32 billion were mortgage loans (–1.0 percent). Against the backdrop of possible tightening of liquidity and capital requirements, the company has acted very cautiously and given greater priority to higher liquidity, the report continues. «The generally difficult economic environment, especially in Germany/Europe, had an additional impact on lending policy.»

Customer deposits remained unchanged at 2.06 billion francs and custody account volumes grew by 9.5 percent to 2.81 billion francs, partly due to the positive market trend.

The portfolio of medium-term notes rose by 25 percent to 246.5 million francs. In contrast, liabilities from customer deposits fell by 2.6 percent to 1.82 billion francs.

Trading Income Significantly Higher

Net commission and service income grew by 8.4 percent to 12.36 million francs. Net trading income increased by as much as 21 percent to 10.67 million francs.

On the cost side, operating expenses grew by 2.3 percent to 27.01 million francs. The largest item was personnel expenses, which increased by 1.9 percent to 15.32 million francs.

25th Anniversary

With around 100 employees, the bank has its headquarters in Heerbrugg in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and a total of seven locations in the region. It emerged in 2000 from the merger of Sparkassa Berneck, founded in 1868, and Spar- und Leihkasse Balgach, founded in 1869.

The anniversary general meeting of Alpha Rheintal Bank will take place on April 25, 2025 in Widnau. The bank's shares are traded over the counter.
