UBS' long-time regional head for Zurich is moving on, finews.com can reveal. His transfer is sparking further staff changes at the Swiss bank. 

Thomas Ulrich has been regional and wealth management for Zurich for UBS since 2009. Now, the banker taking a new job as head of governmental affairs, part of regulatory and governance, effective in October, according to a memo seen by finews.com

There, his role will be to represent UBS' interests in political circles. Ulrich will report to Markus Ronner, who runs UBS regulatory and governance department. 

The 53-year-old Ulrich had been looking to shift gears for some time, and ultimately decided to forfeit the Zurich job in favor of the Bern role.

New Role

He replaces Steve Hottiger, who takes a new role as senior regulatory strategist in October. Hottiger's deputy, Thomas Pohl, remains deputy head of governmental affairs and will report to Ulrich.

The Zurich region showed above-average growth under the tenure of Ulrich, who is widely known among opinion-makers, politicians and other public figures. Ulrich has also presided a local trade body, Zuercher Bankenverband, of 40 banks and insurers for the last seven years.

The trained economist is a UBS lifer, beginning his career at Swiss Bank Corp. in the 1980s. Since then, he has held various roles in private and corporate banking. His replacement has not yet been named.
