In Switzerland, Apple is at loggerheads with the local banking fraternity over its mobile payment system. A much bigger threat seems to emerge in the shape of a corporation of its own size though – on a global scale.

The Swiss Competition Commission last week caught the headlines when its announced it was investigating Swiss banks for having conspired to freeze out Apple Pay, the payment solution of the U.S. tech giant.

The government body said that the Swiss banks were trying to give their own application, Twint, a helping hand in keeping the U.S. competitor out.

Amazon's Digital Wallet

A much bigger problem for Apple arises from a similarly powerful corporation: Amazon plans to launch Amazon Pay, its own digital wallet, according to «The Wall Street Journal» (behind paywall).

In a first step, Amazon will only work with gas stations, restaurants and other businesses that are no direct competitors to its own core business. It isn’t yet known how its product will work in detail.

It is already possible to pay for goods online in various outlets with the information stored with Amazon.
