Zurich Insurance is poaching a risk manager from its overseer in Switzerland. The move represents a homecoming for the executive, who began his career at the Swiss insurer 27 years ago.

The Zurich-based insurer is naming Peter Giger (pictured below) as risk boss and member of top management, effective October 1, it said in a statement. He replaces Alison Martin, who was recently appointed head of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa as well as of bank distribution.

Giger supervised insurers at Swiss financial regulator Finma until March; he was also deputy of CEO Mark Branson during his four-year tenure. The move to Zurich is a homecoming for him: Giger began his career at the insurer in 1992 in mergers-and-acquisitions.

From 1999 until 2002, Giger ran Swiss Re's structured finance area, before returning to Zurich as head of capital management. In 2014, he headed to Bern to work for Finma. His appointment is pending the approval of his successor at Finma, Birgit Rutishauser.
