Citi's former boss is Switzerland spent the last two years as the right hand to CEO Mike Corbat. She is heading back to take the top European job.

The U.S. bank is naming Kristine Braden to run its European cluster, which is 21 western European countries including Switzerland, according to a memo seen by finews.com. Most recently, the American-born banker was chief of staff to Citi CEO Mike Corbat, a job she moved from Zurich to New York for 17 months ago.

In her current job, Braden will be based in Frankfurt and report to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa boss David Livingstone. The current Europe cluster boss, Zdenek Turek, becomes EMEA risk boss.

A 22-year veteran of Citi, Braden will also run CGME, Citi's E.U. investment firm, pending regulatory approval. Braden, a rare woman to have held the CEO job at a Swiss bank, has worked in various roles in South America, Asia, London.

She is a passionate advocate both for workplace diversity and represented Switzerland's financial center in several key industry bodies. Braden is part of Citi's cadre of foreign-based executive talents, who are traditionally moved around in roles and geographies as they advance through the bank's ranks.
