The Swiss insurer promoted a commercial insurance executive to oversee its policy underwriting globally.

The Zurich-based insurer is naming Sierra Signorelli to an expanded group-wide chief underwriting officer, it said in an emailed statement. Signorelli joined Zurich three years ago as chief commercial insurance underwriter, after 17 years at AIG.

Zurich also said its group claims unit, run by Ian Thomson, will move into the commercial insurance unit, which is overseen by by James O'Shea. Both the appointment of Signorelli as well as the organizational change are effective on October 1.

The insurer said it is unifying underwriting under Signorelli in a bid to sharpen its focus and improve its capabilities across the organization. Combining underwriting and claims into one structure supports underwriters as well as customers, Zurich said.
