The SNB is serious about its digital currency project: The Swiss monetary guardians have secured a series of trademark rights after completing the project study.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) recently registered more than a dozen trademarks with the Swiss Federal Patent Office, according to a report by «Handelszeitung». These include the «e-franc» and the «digital Swiss franc». The SNB confirmed the report.

The registration followed the publication of the findings of the «Helvetia» project. The SNB, together with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), worked out the fundamentals and feasibility of a digital currency for the financial market.

Not for Consumers

SIX is also a partner in this project. The Swiss financial market's infrastructure group is working on the launch of a digital exchange, the SDX.

The SNB emphasized to «Handelszeitung» that it is not planning to introduce a digital currency for consumers, but is working exclusively on an e-franc for participants in the financial center.
