Binance reports multibillion-dollar crypto hack

According to the company on Friday, assets with a total value of around 6.3 billion dollars were affected. Of that amount, cryptocurrencies worth about 3 billion dollars were said to have been frozen. This was reported, among others, by the news agency "Bloomberg".

As an immediate response to the security incident, Binance temporarily suspended all withdrawals. According to the company, it is working with law enforcement authorities and carrying out extensive security measures. Withdrawals were expected to resume by Sunday. This was announced by co-founder Yi He via the X platform.

Binance said it would cover all losses itself. Customer funds were safe. As a possible cause of the attack, the crypto exchange cited a compromised laptop belonging to a software developer. So far, it has found no evidence that private keys from wallets were stolen.

Tether and Circle freeze billions

According to the report, the two leading stablecoin providers also responded to the incident. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said that his company had frozen more than 1.5 billion dollars of its own stablecoin USDT, which may be linked to the attack on Binance.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire also confirmed measures. According to him, around 800 million dollars in USDC were frozen in connection with the suspected security incident.

With the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU), established in 2018, Binance has its own reserve fund intended to protect customers in extraordinary situations. It is usually funded with around 1 billion dollars.

Binance emphasizes that it does not have a fixed central headquarters, as the company operates globally and in a decentralized manner. Since early 2026, its global business has been run mainly through entities licensed and regulated by the financial regulator of the Abu Dhabi Global Market.

Bitcoin reacts with price losses

The hacking attack also weighed on the crypto markets. Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, briefly fell below the 77,000-dollar mark. It is currently trading at around 78,400 dollars.
