The former Swiss top politician Ruth Metzler-Arnold is busy developing her career in banking. Following up on her portfolio of board membership, she is now taking a seat on the supervisory committee of a Geneva-based bank.

Reyl & Cie elected Ruth Metzler-Arnold to the board, the company said in a statement today. The former government minister adds another board membership to her portfolio.

Metzler-Arnold is focusing on the finance industry and is the chairwoman of Switzerland Global Enterprise and Aquila & Co.. She also holds board memberships at Buehler, the technology company, Axa-Winterthur and Fehr Advice, a finance boutique. The member of the Christian Democrats is furthermore a governor of the University of St. Gallen and active in a similar capacity at Avenir Suisse, the business-sponsored economic think tank.

Tricky Court Case Impending

«Mrs Ruth Metzler-Arnold embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, which also characterizes our group,» said François Reyl, the CEO of the bank, in the statement.

The appointment to the board of Reyl may be trickier than expected. The bank is part of a court case in France. Jérôme Cahuzac, a former French budget minister, is accused of keeping a black money account, for certain amount of time at Reyl.

The verdict has been announced for December 8, 2016. Reyl may face losing its banking licence in France and François Reyl personally may receive a professional ban. Reyl had briefly been held by the authorities, as finews.ch reported at the time.

UBS and PricewaterhouseCoopers

Metzler-Arnold studied law at the University of Freiburg in Switzerland and is a chartered accountant. She started her career at UBS, joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1990 as an accountant. In 1996 she was elected minister of finance in her native canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.

In March 1999 Metzler-Arnold was elected to the federal government. She acted as justice minister for a little more than four years and won all 14 popular votes during her tenure.

Founder of Business Consultant

After her deselection in 2003, which followed losses of her Christian Democratic party in the parliamentary elections, she took up lecturing at University of St. Gallen and took a mandate at Novartis, the Swiss drug company. She also was member of the board at SIX, the Swiss stock exchange operator.

In 2010, she and some colleagues founded Klaus Metzler Eckmann Spillmann, a strategy, management and communications consultant.
