Banque Cantonale Vaudoise has appointed a former top diplomat as its new chairman, replacing Olivier Steimer. Steimer was in charge of the state-owned bank for fifteen years.

Jacques de Watteville will take up the position as chairman of Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV) in January 2018, replacing Olivier Steimer, who held this position since 2002, the company said in a statement today.

De Watteville was Switzerland’s chief negotiator with the European Union and state secretary for international financial matters at the Federal Department of Finance. He also played a key role in resolving tax disputes with the EU, the U.S., the OECD, and several European countries.

Early Start as an Observer

The cantonal government of Vaud made the appointment at a meeting last month, according to the bank statement. The canton owns two thirds of the bank.

De Watteville will start attending board meetings on September 1, 2017 as an observer and in a bid to facilitate the transition from his long-term predecessor.
