EFG International names a new head of its UK region. He also serves as the CEO of EFG Private Bank, London.

Christian Berchem, joins EFG International from Credit Suisse and will head its UK region and also become the head of EFG Private Bank in London, effective December 4, according to a statement from EFG, Tuesday.

Berchem, who will report to CEO Giorgio Pradelli, succeeds Richard Thomas who is stepping down after four years in the role to pursue other opportunities. 

His remit includes expanding the private banking business in the UK, a market EFG calls «strategically important.» In addition, he will head up efforts to expand the offerings of EFG's products and services in the UK aimed at diversifying its revenue streams there.

Credit Suisse Experience

Until recently, Berchem was at Credit Suisse, serving as CEO of Credit Suisse (UK), its UK Private Banking business, having joined in 2017. He held various senior roles at Barclays, including head of the Private Bank for London.

He also spent nine years at JPMorgan, as head of European Cash Sales, among other functions. Other stops on his career path include Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and KPMG.  

Pradelli said that Thomas «played a vital role in successfully building and transforming EFG’s hub in London, which is now well positioned to generate sustainable and profitable growth.» 

That gives Berham a foundation to «scale up our UK booking center and drive the further growth of our business in one of the world’s most important private banking markets,» Pradelli added.
