The second-largest reinsurer is poaching a German insurance veteran to run an in-house insurance technology start-up.

Swiss Re is hiring Carlo Bewersdorf to run its digital insurance platform, effective from October, it said in an emailed statement on Monday. Bewersdorf is currently head of digital strategy and transformation as well as multi-channel sales and marketing at Hannoversche Lebensversicherung, a German insurer.

Iptiq enjoys top-level attention at Swiss Re, where it is poised to be carved out and placed into its own division reporting directly to CEO Christian Mumenthaler next year. Last week, the in-house start-up unveiled a partnership with UBS, which wants to bake Iptiq's solutions into its own mortgage platform.

Bewersdorf, a German native, ran Allianz's digital efforts until 2016, including strategy ventures in Korea and China. He will continue to be based in Munich.
