An annual cryptocurrency conference held in an exclusive alpine resort will go ahead. The move comes after WEF's organizers cancelled their annual January confab.

The annual crypto finance conference will take place over three days in January, the organizers said in an emailed statement on Wednesday. The event, attended by major investors, family offices, funds and cryptocurrency start-ups, is normally scheduled immediately before the World Economic Forum in Davos. It is held in St. Moritz's five-star Suvretta hotel.

Unlike in past years, the conference wasn't able to clinch a member of Switzerland's ruling seven-person government: this January, foreign minister Ignazio Cassis attended, continuing a tradition laid by then-economic minister Johann Schneider-Amman, who declared «crypto nation Switzerland» in 2018.

Swiss parliament last week passed a so-called blockchain law (in German) which paves the way for digital assets to in the traditional financial system. Thomas Moser, a deputy governor of Switzerland's central bank, will speak at the conference, as will Eva Kaili, a European parliamentarian who is a vocal advocate for blockchain.

«We believe that physical encounters and personal exchanges are more necessary than ever and will be possible under strict hygiene rules,» CFC head Nicolo Stoehr said in the statement. The CFC's organizers said it will ensure the 250-person-maximum is maintained (it had already capped at that number in previous years, in a bid to bolster the event's exclusivity). Along with other safety measures, it will require two negative coronavirus tests, including one administered on-site.
