The investment banker behind big Swiss transactions like Swiss Air's sale to Lufthansa or J. Safra's $1.1 billion purchase of Sarasin is returning to Switzerland for BNP Paribas.

The Geneva-based arm of BNP Paribas is hiring Jan Masek as its head of advisory, effective immediately, it said in a statement on Tuesday. A well-known dealmaker, Masek in HSBC's co-head of mergers and acquisitions for Germany and Switzerland.

Masek is a well known corporate advise who was instrumental in major transactions such as ChemChina's takeover of Syngenta. J. Safra's purchase of Sarasin, and Lufthansa's acquisition of Swiss Air. He will report to Enna Pariset, BNP's head of corporate and institutional banking in Switzerland.

Before HSBC, Masek spent 16 years at J.P. Morgan in a number of M&A roles, including as the U.S. head of investment banking in Switzerland until 2014. Pariset said his supports BNP's aim to strengthen its investment banking capabilities in Switzerland as part of a wider Swiss and European growth plan.
