Fintechs are attracting their young customers not only with digital innovations but also with bank cards with an unusual look. Geneva-based Neobank Alpian is joining them.

You would be forgiven upon seeing the words «heavy metal» that your thoughts run to high-decibel music and bands such as Metallica and Kiss, rather than to credit cards.

While Swiss digital private bank Alpian is not yet active on the broad market, preparations for the launch at the end of 2022 are in full swing. The institution, part of the Geneva-based banking group Reyl Intesa Sanpaolo, announced a partnership with US card giant Visa on Tuesday.

Wooden Promises

It added that Alpian has become a principal member of Visa, allowing it to issue its metal debit card in Switzerland. Alpian clients will have a multi-currency current account in Swiss francs, euros, British pounds, and US dollars, along with real-time foreign exchange capabilities with no handling fees. The card can be used in Switzerland and over 200 countries.

The metal look is not entirely exclusive, as digital banking competitors such as Neon and Revolut are also looking to score points with the public with «heavy metal.» Meanwhile, competitors who want to emphasize their sustainability are relying on cards made of wood.

If the holders of the wooden cards are attending a concert by the heavy metal group KISS, they should be sure to keep their cards away from the bassist Gene Simmons who is known to breathe fire at concerts.
