UBS's technology boss is reorganizing and adding a London-based job. Two prominent tech professionals in Switzerland have to make way.

Mike Dargan, information chief at UBS, is shuffling his management with the hire of ex-Deutsche Banker  Elly Hardwick and Rick Carey from J.P. Morgan, according to an internal memorandum seen by finews.com.

Hardwick and Carey will divvy up the role of current tech chief Hans-Juergen Rieder (pictured below), who will seek a new role. Besides the tech part of the job, which is to ensuret that the bank's information technology works seamlessly, UBS has with Hardwick's hire added a digital chief role.

Artificial Intelligence Move

Hardwick, who most recently ran Frankfurt-based Deutsche's innovation and digital strategy, will take over the Swiss bank's  digital efforts. She will lead UBS' innovation team, which until now reported to Veronica Lange (pictured below), a prominent face in banking and blockchain.

Lange's role in the new set-up is unclear – Dargan says only that she is «continuing to play an important role» in UBS' innovation efforts. Hardwick will take over one of Lange's main responsibilities, which is overseeing the bank's options to use artificial intelligence.

The new hires abroad – Hardwick is based in London and Carey in New York – translate to a loss of influence for Switzerland in UBS' technology. Last year, the bank launched a site in Ticino fr artificial intoelligence, analytics, and robotics.

Cloud Transfer

Building up a so-called center of excellence is also part of Hardwick's responsibilities. In addition to AI, she will focus on automatization. Carey will oversee the transfer of UBS data into cloud-based solutions. He returns to the Swiss bank after more than seven years with J.P. Morgan, where he was a managing director in technology.
