Chicago-based Nuveen is gaining a foothold in Switzerland with a new office in Zurich. The billion-dollar fund house has hired an experienced sales person to head its Swiss business.

US American investment manager Nuveen has opened its first Swiss office in Zurich's historic center and is appointing Christian Leger as country head, it said in a statement Tuesday.  Leger will lead the firm's nationwide expansion and help broaden its offerings to private clients, it said.

Leger most recently served as country head for Allianz Global Investors, a fund house of Germany's Allianz Group.  Leger is bringing Michele Perone along with him from his previous employer to support him in Zurich.

Nuveen now has 17 locations in Europe, including its Swiss opening. The investment manager is a subsidiary of US financial planning firm Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA), known for its previous focus on managing funds for nonprofits such as universities and their employees.

At the end of 2021, Nuveen said it managed $1.3 trillion in assets.
