The Principality plans to accept cryptocurrency as a payment option for government services.

The prime minister of Liechtenstein Daniel Risch told «Handelsblatt» (behind paywall, in German) in an interview the Principality is open to investing some of its 2.2 billion Swiss francs ($2.4 billion) government funds in Bitcoin.

Without saying exactly when, Risch also said Liechtenstein could accept deposits in Bitcoin in the future which it would immediately convert to its national currency, the Swiss franc.

Risch, who also serves as finance minister, has looked into other cryptocurrencies besides Bitcoin but deemed these to be too risky after a deeper assessment.

In Swiss Cities Zug and Lugano, it is already possible to use selected cryptocurrencies to pay for certain goods in stores as well as government services.
