«They seem to trust you» is what I often hear when I tell anyone that I help clients manage their investments. What do I then do? Shrug my shoulders, writes Beat Wyss in a piece for finews.first.

I don’t know whether my clients trust me or not. Until now, none of them have said they do. I have also never asked. It also doesn’t play a big part when it comes to successfully managing wealth.

Successful wealth management is about having common sense, a proper setup, a fiduciary background and being able to communicate with people. Everything needs to be comprehensible and logical. It also works without any of so-called trust.

«I was thanked in advance»

I often dealt with private bankers when I started working in the family office sector. In fact, my clients thanked me in advance with well-designed, elegant brochures that said things like «investing requires trust» and similar. But no work actually took place for that unstated trust. There were also no results.

Experience soon showed that those preventative measures that induced trust helped defray the need to be too transparent or critical about performance. It is not in a client’s interest if the strategy is not really an individualized one, if the costs are too high, if the products are too expensive, and if the level of transaction activity is too high.

«Successful wealth management is primarily about the work done, not trust»

A small aside: when was the last time you had your tires changed? Did the mechanic thank you for the trust that you gave them? No? Have you ever thought what could happen if the wheel nuts were not screwed on properly? You could lose your life - not just money. Still, it probably also never came into the mechanic’s head for even a moment to thank you for the trust you gave them.

Putting the setup and a bit of luck aside, successful wealth management is about the work. It is not about trust. That is why I always shrug my shoulders.
