Why DNB Is Expanding on Both Switzerland and Spain

When it comes to banking and asset management in Norway, DNB is impossible to overlook. The country’s largest bank and its asset management business rank among Norway’s most recognized financial brands. In Switzerland, however, the group is still in the early stages of building its franchise.

DNB Asset Management, that has had presence in continental europe, reenforced its position in Swiss market by opening an office a year ago, while DNB Bank has maintained a local presence for the past two years. The firm is now entering the next phase of its expansion strategy.

«We have successfully established our initial presence and build the team from Zurich and Geneva,» said Amra Koluder, Managing Director and Head of International Clients and Distribution at DNB Asset Management, in an interview with finews.com.

From Banks to Family Offices

During its first phase in Switzerland, DNB focused primarily on building relationships with local banks and financial institutions. The next step is to broaden its reach to additional client segments.

«We are taking a step-by-step approach. Our next priority is to roll out several thematic and enhanced solutions, also to institutional investors in Switzerland. We see strong demand for these offerings,» Koluder told finews.

Target client groups include banks, institutional investors, external asset managers (EAMs), and family offices—all of which play a central role within the Swiss financial ecosystem.

The market-entry strategy differs significantly from DNB’s position in its home market. While the DNB brand enjoys near-universal recognition in Norway, the firm must first establish its reputation in Switzerland.

«Building brand inin Switzerland and internationally, allows us to see ourselves from the outside, and forces a greater clarity about DNA what makes the brand genuinely distinctive, Koluder said.

Two Markets, Two Strategies

Switzerland represents only one pillar of DNB Asset Management’s broader European growth strategy. At the same time, the firm expanded its presence in Spain approximately 18 months ago.

The decision to enter both markets almost simultaneously was no coincidence.

Switzerland is one of Europe’s most important asset management hubs. The market is highly international and provides access to institutional investors, family offices, and wealth managers from around the world. At the same time, barriers to entry are high and competition is intense.

Spain, by contrast, represents a compelling growth market. The country’s fund and wealth management industry has expanded significantly in recent years as more investors shift savings away from traditional bank deposits and into investment and fund solutions.

For DNB, the two markets complement each other well. Switzerland offers access to sophisticated professional investors, while Spain provides attractive opportunities with  high pace of innovation and growth.

More Similarities Than Differences

Despite the differences in market structure, Koluder sees striking similarities between Norway and Switzerland.

«Switzerland and Norway have a lot in common. In fact, I would argue they are the two countries in Europe with the most cultural similarities,» she said.

Both countries benefit from stable political systems, strong economies, high savings rates, and deeply rooted wealth management cultures. In addition, Switzerland and Norway enjoy international reputations as reliable, long-term-oriented financial centers.

A Long-Term Commitment

DNB is not pursuing a short-term expansion strategy. Instead, the firm is gradually building its presence beyond Scandinavia.

Establishing a meaningful position in a new market takes time, particularly in a mature financial center such as Switzerland. Nevertheless, management remains confident that the fundamentals are in place for long-term success.

With its growing teams in Zurich and Geneva and the planned rollout of additional institutional investment solutions, DNB Asset Management has already embarked on the next stage of its Swiss growth story.
